Since the Covid pandemic, many patients have found it increasingly challenging to access GP services within the NHS and may choose to arrange to see a GP privately to avoid delaying their appointment.
People see GPs about a specific health condition or to raise concerns about symptoms or changes they are experiencing. GPs can diagnose and treat many common conditions, including prescribing medications. They can also provide referrals to specialists if they consider that the condition requires expertise from a different discipline, such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. These lines of communication between GPs and specialists ensures that your care is ‘joined up’ and co-ordinated. Where possible and desired by the patient, our GP can refer you to an ‘in house’ specialist at The Day Clinic to make you treatment as streamlined as possible, however we are also happy to refer to a different facility should this be preferable.
There are several reasons why it is important to see a GP including:
- Routine check-ups: Regular visits to a GP can help monitor your overall health and identify any potential issues before they become serious.
- Preventive care: GPs can provide guidance on preventive measures such as vaccinations, screenings, weight loss and lifestyle changes to help you maintain good health and prevent diseases.
- Management of chronic conditions: If you have a chronic condition like diabetes, asthma, or high blood pressure, a GP can help you manage and monitor your condition to prevent complications.
- Acute illnesses: GPs can diagnose and treat common illnesses like colds, flu, infections, and minor injuries. They can also prescribe appropriate medications if needed.
- Mental health support: GPs can provide initial assessment and treatment for mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress. They can also refer you to specialists if necessary.
- Specialist referrals: If you require specialised care, a GP can refer you to the appropriate specialist and coordinate your healthcare.
- Health advice and education: GPs can provide valuable information and advice on various health topics, including nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, and family planning.
- Monitoring medications: If you are taking medications, a GP can ensure they are appropriate for your condition, monitor their effectiveness, and address any concerns or side effects.
