About this Condition

Men’s urinary symptoms can affect both comfort and quality of life.

They are a common reason for seeking urological care, particularly as men grow older. These symptoms can range from mild inconveniences to signs of underlying health issues that require medical attention.

Men’s urinary symptoms may present in different ways, often beginning gradually. Many men notice an increased need to urinate more frequently during the day or night (known as nocturia), sometimes waking several times at night to pass urine. Others may experience a slower or weaker stream, hesitancy when starting to urinate, or a feeling that the bladder is not fully empty even after using the toilet. Some men may also encounter sudden, urgent needs to urinate that are difficult to control. In some cases, urinary symptoms may also include pain, stinging, discomfort, or blood in the urine.

While these symptoms are usually a sign of a benign condition, they can be worrying and disruptive. They may be associated with changes in the prostate, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – a condition that causes the prostate to enlarge and press on the bladder and urethra. However, they can also result from other underlying issues, including urinary tract infections, inflammation, bladder stones, or in some cases, prostate or bladder cancer.

It is important to be aware of any changes and to seek medical advice if symptoms become persistent, worsen over time, or are accompanied by other signs such as blood in the urine, pain, or unexpected weight loss.

Our investigations may include urine tests, blood tests including PSA levels, ultrasound scans, or a flexible cystoscopy to examine the bladder and urethra directly. Depending on the cause identified, treatment options are tailored to each patient’s needs, whether that includes medication, lifestyle advice, or a minimally invasive procedure.
